Short-Form Vertical Video for Digital Activism

Six formats, one structure (Hook → Core → Call to Action) and the platform rules you need to turn a message into a video people don't scroll past.

Po delavnici znaš …

  • Compare six core vertical formats (rants, dialogues, satire/sketches, video essays, reactions, vox populi) and what each needs to produce
  • Use the Lookout Mindset, trend integration and AI-assisted steelmanning to sharpen a message
  • Apply Hook → Core → Call to Action, humour as a Trojan horse, relatable personas and clear oppositional framing
  • Respect platform limits and caption zones, and avoid safety hazards and algorithmic penalties on sensitive topics
O delavniciA practical, hands-on guide to using short-form vertical video for civic engagement, political commentary and social activism. It explains why vertical video has become the dominant format, and how its full-screen orientation creates immediacy, urgency and authenticity.

Participants analyse a full taxonomy of short-form styles: "boomer car rants", multi-persona dialogues, satire, video essays and vox populi interviews. They learn practical strategies including the "Lookout Mindset", trend-jacking, steelmanning counter-arguments, and scripts built on the Hook → Core → Call to Action framework.

The lesson covers psychological tactics such as memes as Trojan horses for complex or radical ideas, persona building, and using confrontation to increase shareability.

Finally, it covers the technical logistics: platform specs for TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, publishing best practices, safety warnings, and how to avoid algorithmic censorship or shadowbanning on sensitive political topics.

The vertical revolution

  • The mobile context: social media went from static to video, and over 90% of social media consumption happens on mobile.
  • Portrait vs. landscape: orientation is a friction barrier. Vertical video takes 100% of the screen and feels intimate, urgent and raw.
  • A call to creators: "The world is run by those who show up." Post consistently on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts.

Taxonomy of short-form video formats

Six formats, each with a different production effort and strategic advantage:

  • 1Monologue rantDirect to camera (e.g. "boomer car rants"). Very authentic and fast to make, but audiences tire of it.
  • 2DialogueOne creator plays two personas looking off-camera. Great for tackling talking points and counter-arguments in a controlled, fun way.
  • 3Sketch & satireHigh viral potential. Humour disarms prejudice.
  • 4Video essay / explainerFaceless voiceover over B-roll and graphics. Allows deep policy dives without being on camera, but needs heavy scripting.
  • 5ReactRelies on drama-bait and provocation.
  • 6Vox populiStreet interviews. Very authentic, but you give up some control over the narrative.

Strategy, psychology and technical tactics

  • The Lookout Mindset: social listening. Scan news feeds, comment sections, and pop and online culture to spot existing attention you can hijack.
  • Steelmanning: anticipate the strongest version of your opponent's argument and address it. AI tools can help test counter-points.
  • The Trojan horse: humour and memes slip past audience defences to deliver a political idea.
  • Relatability (Wojak / "literally me"): show genuine emotion, stay unpolished, speak directly to "you".
  • Confrontation: content with a clear opponent is shared twice as much. Direct, bold honesty ("pouring pure wine") builds trust.

Every video: Hook → Core → CTA

  • Hook: the first 3 seconds
  • Core message
  • Call to action

Specifikacije platform

TikTok
Flexible length
Instagram Reels
Recommended up to 3 min
YouTube Shorts
Up to 3 min

⚠ Pozor

  • Put the hook on screen as a caption in seconds 1–3. Write descriptions as teasers with relevant keywords and hashtags.
  • Never film while driving or biking.
  • Watch out for shadowbanning on war, violence or sensitive conflicts (e.g. Israel/Palestine). Use coded language ("algospeak") when necessary.

Group activity: scripting a vertical activist video

Aktivnost

In groups of 3–4, draft a script and storyboard for a 60-second vertical video on a civic or social issue.

  1. Pick a formatChoose one from the taxonomy, e.g. dialogue, satire or explainer.
  2. Write a 3-second hookBoth visual and verbal.
  3. Add a Trojan horseA trend, humour or a pop-culture reference.
  4. Name the opponentIdentify a clear opponent or counter-argument and steelman it.
  5. End with a CTAA concrete, actionable call to action.

Each group pitches its concept to the class in 90 seconds. Would the first 3 seconds stop you from scrolling?

Reflection and closing

Vprašaj skupino

  • How do we balance drama-bait or confrontation with ethical, truthful messaging?
  • How can activists discuss heavily moderated political issues without getting their accounts penalised?

Ključno sporočilo

Review the technical don'ts (audio quality, safety, caption placement). Consistency beats perfection in short-form.
