From Hate to Change: Counter-Narratives in Action

Spot the harmful stories that shape public opinion, and learn to answer them with facts, context and dignity instead of insults.

90 minNarrativesEmotional triggers5-step counter-narrative

Po delavnici znaš …

  • Understand the difference between a narrative and a counter-narrative
  • Identify emotional triggers in harmful narratives: fear, anger, disgust, humiliation, distrust
  • Analyse how counter-narratives expose manipulation, provide facts, shift perspective and defend human rights
  • Tell an effective counter-narrative apart from an insult, personal attack, deflection or empty sarcasm
  • Develop a basic counter-narrative in response to a harmful narrative
O delavniciThe lesson introduces narratives and counter-narratives as tools for understanding, challenging and transforming harmful messages in media, politics and digital communication. It explores how dominant narratives shape public perception of social issues. It shows how they can justify discrimination, violence or exclusion, and how counter-narratives can restore dignity, provide context and promote human rights.

Participants analyse how harmful narratives appear in headlines, social media posts, comments and public discourse. They learn to identify emotional triggers (fear, anger, disgust, humiliation, status threat and distrust) and how these are used to manipulate audiences or mobilise hostility toward marginalised groups.

The lesson then focuses on practical strategies: exposing manipulation, introducing facts and context, shifting perspective, protecting the dignity of victims and marginalised groups, and reframing the conversation around human rights, equality and social responsibility.

Examples relate to sexism, gender-based violence, racism, homophobia, transphobia and extremism. They can be swapped for locally relevant cases of harmful reporting, discriminatory discourse, online hate speech or activist counter-campaigns.

What stories shape our reality?

The facilitator opens with a short introduction of the Center for Civil Initiatives Poreč, a feminist, human rights and peacebuilding non-profit that has promoted human rights and active citizenship since 1992. Then the facilitator leads a short discussion.

Vprašaj skupino

  • Where do we encounter social and political "stories" every day?
  • Can headlines, posts or comments influence how we see certain groups of people?
  • Can a story make someone appear guilty, dangerous, invisible or less worthy of empathy?
  • Have you ever seen a post or comment that challenged a harmful stereotype or false claim?

Ključno sporočilo

Narratives are not neutral. They decide what society sees as the problem, who is blamed, who counts as a victim and which solutions seem possible.

What is a counter-narrative?

  • Narratives as dominant stories that shape public understanding
  • Harmful narratives that justify discrimination, violence or exclusion
  • Counter-narratives as deliberately crafted messages that challenge or overturn harmful narratives
  • The difference between a counter-narrative and a simple opposing opinion
  • Examples in comments, posts, visuals, campaigns, public statements, media analyses and advocacy

A counter-narrative can…

  • expose manipulation
  • provide facts and context
  • shift perspective
  • defend the dignity and rights of marginalised groups
  • reframe the issue around justice, equality and responsibility

Ključno sporočilo

Counter-narratives matter because narratives shape reality. Left unquestioned, harmful narratives become normal.

Case study "Everyday sexism": from harmful reporting to counter-narrative

Participants analyse an example of harmful media reporting or online communication: gender-based violence, sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, migration, extremism or another locally relevant issue.

Notice not only what is said, but what is left unsaid. Harmful reporting may focus on gossip, private details or the perpetrator's feelings while ignoring structural violence, institutional responsibility, victim dignity or available support.

Vprašaj skupino

  • What is the dominant narrative in this example?
  • Who is being blamed, erased, dehumanised or misrepresented?
  • Which emotional trigger is used: fear, anger, disgust, humiliation or distrust?
  • What facts or context are missing?
  • How could it be reframed to protect dignity and human rights?
  • What would an effective counter-narrative look like?

An effective counter-narrative is not an insult, a personal attack, whataboutism or sarcasm without substance. It is clear, fact-based, accessible and respectful of human dignity. Each group briefly presents its result.
